This is one of those weeks in which I feel I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off, yet there's nothing much to say about it in my update! With my new job (with strange hours) ramping up, I feel over-committed to family, friends, and volunteer work so that I have very little free-time for myself. I ended up having to borrow free time, missing two events last week. But I've now rearranged certain aspects of my schedule - hopefully that will help.
I am sadly behind on my book reviews, but I have penciled into my calendar to write a review for The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm on Tuesday and Why Zebras Don't Have Ulcers on Thursday. We'll see if proactively planning my reviews gets me caught up!
The activity my blog HAS seen this week is that I decided to organize a full Bible Group Read through the year 2017. I already have a group interested on LibraryThing, if you prefer that venue. Or if you would like to casually or all-out join me reading / blogging about the Bible next year, let me know!
This week I completed To Kill a Mockingbird, and I loved it. Though the ending made me laugh because it reminded me of when my mom told me "I didn't understand that book..." When I got to the ending I understood why. lol. Mom. So literal.
In light of my new plan to read the Bible, I decided to read some preparatory non-fiction. I've temporarily set aside The Myth of Sisyphus, which I started last week. Also, The Fifth Child won last week's vote, so that's what I'll be reading for Halloween. This week I'm reading How to Read the Bible, by James L Kugel, Stiletto, by Daniel O'Malley, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, by J. K. Rowling.
I'm linking this post back to the Sunday Salon (on Facebook) and Caffeinated Reviewer's Sunday Post. Oh, and oh, so cute, I found this Loving Life Meme too. Check it out! What I love about life today is my friend Charity, whom I haven't seen in months - got to see her last night as a surprise hang-out.
Being too busy to do all the things we want to do is such a pervasive issue for some of us. I think that it is so admirable that you manage to still give time to your volunteer efforts.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend Jesus and Yahweh: The Names Divine by Harold Bloom as a great Bible related read. Bloom is opinionated and I do not always agree with him, but is take on the Old Testaments is unique and thought provoking. I find his theory that the original version of the First Five Books of the Old Testament were written by a Noblewoman who was part of King Solomon's Court, intriguing.
Thanks for the suggestion Brian, I'll put it on my list. I was hoping I'd have time to finish The Art of Biblical Narrative as well as How to Read the Bible before I start my bible study, but I'll see if I can squeeze Jesus and Yahweh in afterwards.
DeleteOh, yes, our over-scheduled lives do keep us from enjoying more. I'm glad you have decided to change things up a bit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog. Enjoy your books!
Yeah, of course everyone in my life is like "why are you going to your volunteer shift in the middle of a Sunday?!" but it was the only time that works with my new schedule. Hopefully this change-up will have a good impact on my life. :)
DeleteWhat a happy photo to end with! That's a terrific love your life event.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joy!
DeleteI had started To Kill a Mockingbird, but I don't think I even got halfway through the book. I got bored with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely checking out your post on reading the Bible! That's amazing!
Have a good week :)

Thanks for stopping by Genesis!
DeleteI hope the schedule smooths out, nothing like running around with your head cut off! I loved TKAMB. Hope this week is a good one!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping it will be, too. I'm starting up work at a new clinic tomorrow and am all nervous!
DeleteSo lovely to have you on the Lovin' Life Linky! Thanks for lovin' the meme.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Leanne!
DeleteI constantly struggle with not having enough time to do everything, especially reading/reviewing as many books as I'd like to! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah...hopefully things will settle down once the nephew's football season is over!
DeleteI only read To Kill A Mockingbird this past year too for the first time. I had seen the movie several times, and I thought I had read the book, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, just as much as the movie. The movie was pretty faithful to the book.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the movie in years. I'm probably due for a re-watch.
DeleteI like the sound of your Bible read, that sounds like a lot of fun. And I hope this week is a little calmer- I hate it when weeks are crazy like that. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg!
DeleteI can sympathise with your sense of being overwhelmed and restructuring your time is a really practical, sensible response. We all need time for ourselves... Your project to read The Bible sounds fascinating. Which version of The Bible are you planning to use?
ReplyDeleteI have 5 bibles, it turns out, each a different version. I think I will go with the ESV, though, since it is my Literary Study Bible. I might peek through the others and see how they compare in places, though. I'm curious which translation speaks to me the best.
DeleteSome weeks are just like that. You feel so busy, but there's nothing really to talk about. And sorry you're feeling overwhelmed, that's good if you've managed to rearrange some things, you definitely need to have time for yourself!
ReplyDeleteI read To Kill a Mockingbird twice for school, but I don't remember it all that well. Glad you enjoyed it though! Have a great week :-)
Funny that some people have to read these books twice and I never read it even once for school! Hope you had a great week too!
DeleteIt's good to be busy! That way you always have something to do. On the other hand, it's nice not to be busy because then you have more free time. Have a good week! :)
ReplyDeleteNice to have free time to read, anyway. Lol
DeleteIt's been a while since I read To Kill a Mockingbird, but I loved it as well and love the movie. I hope you penciling in reviews helps. I know how crazy life can be. Thanks for stopping by and I hope this week goes well!
ReplyDeleteTressa @ Wishful Endings
Penciling in the reviews only half-helped. But that's progress.
DeleteTo Kill a Mocking Bird is my favorite book of all time! Seeing friends after an extended absence is akways the best. Have a terrific week. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was quite the book.
DeleteI read To Kill a Mockingbird years ago in high school, but to honest I don't remember it all too well - I think I've tried to block out all those memories of high school book reports and reading tests! :P I love being busy too, but sometimes something just has to give - there are only so many hours in the day, unfortunately!!
ReplyDeleteEthan Frime was my curse in high school. Too much fake symbolism that we were supposed to memorize.
DeleteIt's so nice to catch up with friends that you just click with isn't it? You do a lot alof reading! #LovinLifeLinky
ReplyDeleteYeah, actually I read pretty slowly compared to most book bloggers.
