Plans for 2017

Due to the complexity of my reading plans next year, I've decided to make categories to organize my thoughts and make sure I read everything:

Category 1: Group Read of 6 Books to Help Understand Trump's Win

Category 2: However-will-I-get-to-them?

Category 3: The Cover-to-Cover Bible Group Read

Category 4: The Wizard of Oz Read-along
hosted by Lone Star on a Lark

Category 5: Magazines

Category 6: Spontaneity
Including choices from:
Real Life Book Club
Doing Dewey's Nonfiction Book Club
Entomology of a Bookworm &The Shrinkette's Social Justice Bookclub

As you might imagine, things might not go as planned next year. But I will diligently read for the two group reads that I'm hosting.

  1. This is a brilliant idea! I love reading review copies, because they're free; they just show up at my door; and they don't have hard deadlines like library books. The problem with review copies is that if I allow the review copies I can get to dictate my reading, I often don't read so much in categories that are important to me. I think making a list like this and participating in your category one could help me be more deliberate in my reading in 2017, something that feels more important than ever this year.

    1. I've gotten caught up in the review-copy craze too, and it can really soak up a lot of reading time that could go towards books I already own or have wanted to read for a long time. I was trying for balance this year, but ended up over-committing myself. :)

  2. I read hillbilly elegy. I grew up in Central Appalachia and that book was so spot on!

  3. It looks like you have some worthy books on deck.

I have written in soe detail about my reading plans. Flexibility is a big part of them.

    1. There's no room for flexibility in next year's plan, and I'm afraid I'm already making goals for 2018. Though they are vastly different than my goals this year.

  4. Love how you've categorized all these! Hillbilly Elegy is really good (but it's first and foremost a memoir, don't expect a super technical social analysis) and The Handmaid's Tale is fantastic. I've had my eye on the George Packer too.

    1. Yeah, I knew Hillbilly Elegy was a memoir. I heard some complaints that it's not quite memoir because there's social analysis, and some complaint that it's not at all social analysis it's memoir. So I'm keeping my expectations up in the air for this one.

  5. Good plans! I have an in-person monthly book club, plus I want to join in with your group read of understanding Trump's win. That's about as much structure as I can stand!

  6. I am planning on some reading most of the books that happen to be on the NYT list for understanding Trump's victory, and will join in when I can for any of your discussions. I am also planning towards the Oz Read-along. I read The Underground Railroad this year, and wasn't as taken with it as so many are. The Handmaid's Tale is on my shortlist.

    1. There are a few people I've talked to who feel the same way about Underground Railroad as you do. I'm a little skeptical myself. But am willing to give it a try.
